Highlights

Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek takes you into one of Nepal’s most preserved and culturally rich regions, once known as the forbidden kingdom of Lo. Lying in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the landscape here is strikingly different from other trekking routes, with arid valleys, wind carved cliffs, and colorful rock formations.

This trek follows ancient trade routes once used by salt caravans between Tibet and Nepal. Along the trail, you pass traditional villages, centuries old monasteries, chortens, and cave dwellings carved into cliffs. The strong Tibetan influence is visible in daily life, architecture, and religious practices, offering a rare cultural experience.

Upper Mustang is ideal for trekkers seeking history, culture, and dramatic scenery rather than high passes or extreme altitude. With controlled tourism and a special permit system, the region remains untouched and authentic, making this trek a truly unique Himalayan journey.

As the trail enters the restricted area, trekkers pass through stone built villages, prayer flags, mani walls, and ancient monasteries that reflect deep Tibetan Buddhist influence. The valley is home to warm and welcoming communities who maintain a simple lifestyle rooted in spiritual practice. Views of Ganesh Himal and surrounding peaks add to the peaceful atmosphere.

Unlike high altitude adventure treks, Tsum Valley offers a slower, more meaningful trekking experience focused on culture and nature. The trek is ideal for those seeking spiritual depth, quiet trails, and an authentic Himalayan lifestyle. Its combination of cultural immersion and scenic beauty makes it one of Nepal’s most rewarding hidden treks.
